CARE LAB

Stop By & Say Hi

Thank you for taking the time to learn about CARE lab and what we do.

Mentorship

I was fortunate to have wonderful mentors throughout my education. My mentors, Dr. Eunju Yoon, Dr. Matt Miller, Dr. Rachel Smith, Dr. Danielle Sirles, Dr. Ilya Yaroslavsky, and Dr. Laura Stull helped me become a thoughtful and thorough researcher and clinician.

I have always been passionate about the intellectual pursuit of knowledge through research and expect to remain so throughout my career. I believe that the work of researchers is enhanced when they are committed to the larger goal of instilling positive change in human lives. For me, research, mentoring, teaching, and community services are deeply interconnected. I strive to deepen my services to the marginalized communities through research, practice, community-based interventions, and mentorship.

Prospective Graduate Students

I will be taking on a new doctoral advisee in Fall 2026 in the Counseling Psychology doctoral program at Iowa State University. For additional information regarding the application process (deadline December 1), please visit the Counseling Psychology Program website. You do not need to send me an email before submitting your application. As long you as you mention your interest in working with me in your statement of purpose, I will carefully review your application. Please note that I do not meet with any prospective students prior to formal interviews.

What I look for in Doctoral Advisees:

The most important factor is fit – between your research interests, the focus of my lab, and my mentorship style. I enjoy working with students who are:

  • Hardworking, thoughtful, and passionate about their research

  • Independent and self-motivated

  • Open to feedback, organized, and attentive to detail

  • Curious, resilient, and willing to tolerate ambiguity* (valuable skills for clinicians)

  • Collaborative and community-oriented

I especially value students who support one another, foster a sense of community in the lab, and engage with research as both an intellectual and social justice pursuit.

I view mentorship as a collaborative process: my role is to help students develop their own scholarly vision, deepen critical thinking, and achieve their career goals. I encourage my advisees to begin their own research projects as early as the end of their first year, take the lead on first-author papers, and engage in community outreach.

I deeply value my students’ insights, creativity, and commitment to social justice, and I see my lab as a space for mutual learning and growth.
